Starting Young
The growing stress of modern life leads many parents to neglect their own dental health and that of their children. Your child’s dental health should always be a vital health priority.
Help keep yours and your children’s mouth healthy by practicing good dental health habits. With regular visits to your dentist, you will be avoiding unexpected dental charges that come with poor dental health.
Teach your child to have an interest in brushing and caring for their teeth as early as possible. A practical and effective way to get your child interested in dental hygiene is to show how much you enjoy looking after your teeth. Childhood cavities are preventable and prevention is the key to improved oral health. Too many children experience preventable dental disease.
Sugars in soft drinks causes tooth decay. Children who go to bed with bottles of juice will have carbohydrates sitting on the teeth during the night ultimately causing decay.
As a responsible parent, it is your duty to make sure you teach your children the proper way to care for their teeth and gums. If though your children may have not developed their permanent teeth, it is vital that they learn the correct way to care for their teeth and gums now. By teaching and implementing good dental hygiene, you will create habits and traits that will follow them into their adulthood and last a lifetime.
Here are some helpful tips to show your child how to care for their teeth:
- Oversee Manage and Correct: Make sure you supervise them as they brush their teeth. Put a pea-sized dot of toothpaste on a soft-bristled brush and be sure to teach them to spit the toothpaste out -- swallowing too much fluoride toothpaste can permanently stain teeth.
- Brush After Taking Medicine: If you are sick, take your medication as directed and brush, brush, brush: Make sure, if you are sick and you are taking medicine to brush after you take your medicine as sugar can be found in most medicines and the sugar is converted into acid that will attack your tooth enamel.
- Dentists Know Best: When you visit your child's dentist make sure you ask your dentist to explain what they are doing to your child. Dentists are only too happy to help kids understand the steps to good dental hygiene and they will show your child how best to look after their teeth.
- Diet Matters: Make sure your child maintains a healthy diet loaded with fruits and veggies, and low in sweetened foods and drinks.
- Sneaky In Between Snacks: Limit snacks between meals especially those high in sugar where possible.
- Brush, Brush Brush: Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste to help reduce or prevent cavities.
- Use A Kids Mouthwash: Use a mouthwash with fluoride it can help prevent possible cavities from developing. Check the age restrictions before you give it to your kids.
- Good Habits Start Young: So make sure you start teaching your kids while they are still young.
Watch Your Diet.
Sugars are not the only foods that lead to expensive dental treatment. Acidic foods including those foods that are good for us can cause dental problems if we let them. Fruit and fruit based food products contain citric acids, yoghurt contains lactic acid and wine which contains tartaric acid and they all attack your tooth enamel.
Remeber fruit is an inceredibly important part of your diet; just try to finish a meal with glass of milk or a small piece of cheese, the alkaline will counteract the acid you have on your teeth.
Brush, floss and use a mouthwash on a (twice)-daily basis to keep your mouth clean and fresh.
If you clean your teeth every day, twice a day with brushing and flossing why do you need to go to the dentist to have your teeth cleaned and polished?
Good dental hygiene is necessary for the daily care of your teeth and gums but it is necessary to have your teeth de-scaled and polished at least twice per year.
When we brush and floss our teeth, we are removing food debris from on and around our teeth. Food debris harbours bacteria and it is the bacteria that makes our breath smell. Keeping our teeth clean also keeps our breath smelling fresh.
Throughout the day, our mouths are producing saliva. Saliva is a good thing because contains calcium and other substances that strengthen our teeth and keep them strong.
The problem lays in the fact that we get a build up of calcium on our teeth close to where the teeth meet the gum. Calcium on our teeth is like limescale on a kettle. You do not see it until there is a problem. Bacteria can hide under the accumulated calcium and will eventually begin to cause tooth decay as the gum is pushed away from the tooth.
Dentists remove the calcium larger deposits with ultrasonic instruments and then by scraping the smaller particles. With the calcium removed and rinsed from the mouth, the dentist will polish the surface of the teeth.
Not only does polishing look nice when you smile but also leaves a shiney surface that residue cannot stick to.
To keep your teeth in tip top condition and your smile gleaming, have your teeth cleaned professionally during your twice yearly dental check up.
